Today 19 June 2008 was a day full of excitement and most thrilling day of my life. It was the day for my business exercise.The day started at 8:30 am and we were allotted an area called Laxmi Road in Pune. Our task was to seek an employment for the day and earn incentives more than Rs.150 from it. It was a day to understand management of life without money and planning your own ways to cope with the situation.
I left college at 10:15am with my group including Karishma Chau han & Suresh Mehra. We took a lift to SB Road in a car then we took lift from another car to Bhandarkar Road. I was amazed and really happy to see that how helpful people are in Pune. Then it was time to play some tricks because innocence was not working anymore. I told an auto rickshaw driver to help me and my group telling him that we are late for exams and we don't have any money left with us to reach Deccan. Now it was time for my partner who came up with a story that she lost her purse and need to go to Laxmi Road Police Station and we persuaded another auto rickshaw to give us lift till Laxmi Road. Now we were at our working area for the day and it was time to search a job.
At 10:35 am we were at place and started asking many big shops to hire us for one day but nothing worked till 11:15 am. We checked out many big clothing line stores, sweet shops and even saree shops for job but it wasn't working. Suddenly we walked into a John Player Showroom and i got job in there.
I was supposed to be a salesman for today. I started with fellow salesmen who were already working there. These men were the most helpful and were teaching me alot. I learnt folding and packing of shirts and pants. I learnt the way how they interact and behave with different kinds of people. They taught me how to read people's likes by just looking at them for few seconds when they walk into the showroom and it was really fun beacause they were really good at doing that. They taught me and gave me chance to handle a customer. This was the first time in my life that i actually sold a shirt to one customer and made me feel really awesome. I assisted these guys and even helped them in sales of products. In the afternoon the people in store were really few so my learning session with salesmen started again. They told me how to behave with people you know are just for a walk in stores and how to pull back a customer who's getting out of their hands. I heard and tried to learn each and everything they taught me. It was a day full of fun and hardwork because i was standing from the time i started searching for job but it was worth the experience.
In my opinion the thing i was getting worried about turned out to be very interesting and once in a lifetime experience. I think it was most unique experience of my life and i am really priviledged that i got this opportunity. In the end of day the store manager gave me Rs.150 for my learning and the work i did which i felt was nothing as compared to the knowledge and chance they gave me. So in the end my both hands were full with knowledge and some money so it felt great. Finally i would just like to say that it was one of those opportunities who very few people get and i am very lucky and grateful to my college and Prof. Manohar Kamath for it.
